"W.E.B. Du Bois & the Problem(s) of the 21st Century"

This department sponsored academic conference features the current work of our distinguished faculty, as well as that of renowned scholars from the nation's top universities and around the world. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Nahum Chandler of the University of California at Irvine. The conference will open with a special performance and will feature esteemed guest, Esther Cooper Jackson, co-founder of Freedomways, the leading African-American theoretical, political and cultural journal of the 1960s-1980s.

Each year, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recognizes talented senior undergraduates with Honors for completing a thesis in their major. This year, the Department of African and Afro-American Studies is delighted to have two students, Amarachi Anakaraonye and Kenille Sumler, conducting research projects in the Honors program which should result in honors theses for these outstanding students.
